For the first time, an African American will be Chairman of the Coffee County Commission.
The board rotated the position to District 5 Commissioner Bernest Brooks by a six to one vote.
Brooks will hold the chairmanship until November 2006.
He was first elected in 1992 and has previously "criticized" the commission for not allowing a black to serve as chairman.
Brooks "thanked" his colleagues for their overwhelming support.
The board unanimously approved District 6 Commissioners Jim Thompson as vice chairman.
On the rotation basis, Thompson is expected to be elected chairman by the board next year.
