A friend found 61-year-old Buford Bowlin lying in the bedroom of his home around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.
The elderly man was bleeding from the head and police initially thought Bowlin may have fallen and injured himself, but doctors later determined he had been stabbed in the head.
Bowlin is listed in critical condition at Southeast Alabama Medical Center.
Police say the man had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and given only months to live.
They also say nothing appears to be missing from the home and a motive for the attack has not been established.
