he government is offering $2358 to victims of Hurricane Katrina to help pay for three months rent. It's scrapped plans to provide $2000 to people who need immediate cash assistance.
The new rental program began this week and only applies to housing. The previous cash program offered money to eligible hurricane victims for immediate needs such as food, transportation and shelter.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of
Housing and Urban Development hope the rental assistance will serve
as a transition for the thousands of displaced families still dependent on temporary shelters. The money is available by check or electronic funds transfer.
