Music is ringing in the halls of Dothan elementary schools once again, thanks to a program called Encore. Starting this week, all Dothan elementary students will get to have music classes. Heard Elementary started their first music class on Monday.
Michael keeley is the Music Director for First United Methodist Church of Dothan. He’s volunteering an hour of his time to teach two fifth grade classes music. Keeley and the other volunteers teach the kids one song, then they teach them about the instruments that are used in the song. Teacher Dorenda Bowen says it has been six years since music was taken out of the classroom. However she says the new Encore program makes her job easier because the children look forward to school.
Volunteers are still needed for the Encore program. If you would like to help, call the Cultural Arts Center at (334) 702-7139.
