A state lawmaker from Louisiana says workers at a nursing home just outside New Orleans abandoned 30 patients, who then died in their beds as hurricane floodwaters rose.
State Representative Nita Hutter says some sort of rescue plan never materialized and the workers "left them in those beds" in Chalmette, Louisiana.
Hutter says she survived Hurricane Katrina in St. Bernard Parish. She and an emergency worker kept calling the state throughout the hurricane, saying the water was rising. Officials couldn't get to them during the storm, so they helped rescue others in Chalmette.
