National Weather Service forecasters are predicting the bitterly cold week already started in north and central Alabama could get nasty before the weekend.
But they stress their predictions are very preliminary.
A low-pressure system forming in the Rocky Mountains could push into Alabama by week's end and dump up to three inches of snow on the state from Birmingham northward. In the southern counties, there's a chance of rain becoming mixed with sleet.
Meteorologists said three major computer models also show moisture from the Gulf of Mexico could fuel the winter storm which is expected to start with rain on Thursday and then turn into a wintry mix of precipitation Thursday night and Friday morning.
