Lampkin Trial

Opening arguments were heard Monday in the murder trial of Vincent Lampkin, who disappeared after the murder for more than a decade.

Vincent Lampkin is charged with shooting Gwendolyn Brock to death outside a Dothan nightclub in 1990.

Defense attorneys claim Brock was killed when Lampkin's gun fired accidentally as he was handing her the weapon.

But prosecutors said the woman was so afraid of Lampkin that she jumped from a moving vehicle to get away from him a few months before she was killed.

Witnesses had identified Lampkin as the killer, but he fled the state immediately after the murder. Police finally caught up with him in April of 2001 in New Orleans.

Investigators said he was married and working as a barber under an assumed name.

Lampkin is being held without bond pending the outcome of the trial.
