A man who claimed to be high on LSD when he raped and killed a woman in her Panama City Beach home is getting a death sentence.

Circuit Judge Don Sirmons said the cruel nature of the crimes committed by Paul Everett outweigh any mitigating factors. The death sentence is for the November 2001 killing of Kelli Bailey.

Jurors deliberated for less than an hour before last month convicting Everett on charges of first-degree murder, sexual battery with serious physical force and burglary with battery. The jury was unanimous in its recommendation that Everett be sentenced to die.

During his trial, the medical examiner testified that Bailey suffocated after her neck was broken by a violent pull and twist. Prosecutors said Bailey died slowly as Everett raped her.

Sirmons said Everett's lack of remorse was another factor in his decision.
