Unwanted Calls

A federal "do-not-call" list to stop unwanted telemarketing may be put on hold -- because of opposition from key lawmakers.

The revised federal telemarketing rules were issued by the Federal Trade Commission last month.

Consumers would enroll in the free service using the Internet or a toll-free number. Violators could be fined up to $11,000 for each violation.

Similar do-not-call lists are in operation or pending in 24 states, including Alabama.

More than 30,000 Alabamians have tried to avoid unwanted telephone sales calls by signing up for the state's no-call list.

Under the law, the Alabama Public Service Commission collects names for the no-call list. Residents can get on it for free by writing the commission or filling out a form on its Web site.

To get a form:

  • Request one by writing to the Alabama PSC at P.O. Box 304260;
    Montgomery, 36130-4260.

  • Call the PSC toll-free at 1-877-727-8200.

  • Download the form from the PSC Internet site at http://www.psc.state.al.us.
