A Mobile-based Army Reserve unit is getting prepared for an undisclosed assignment.

Fifty reservists with the 7223rd Army Medical Support Unit will be called to duty on Jan. 17.

Major William Nutter, spokesman for the 81st Army Reserve Support Command in Birmingham said the soldiers could participate in the war on terrorism or be deployed in support of homeland defense.

He said about 30 of the reservists will report to Fort Benning, Georgia for training -- another 20 soldiers will be trained at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

Meanwhile, members of the Fifth Medical Group, Detachment One, an Army Reserve unit based in Birmingham, also have been activated. The detachment will report to Fort Stewart, Georgia for mobilization. Their assignment was not disclosed.

A farewell ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Army Reserve Center in Birmingham.
