Carnegie Heroine

A south Alabama woman who saved a two-year-old boy from being struck by a truck after he ran onto a highway is among the latest Carnegie award winners.

Thirty-four-year-old Anita Bowden, a native of Abbeville, saved the child in October 2001. She will get a bronze medal and $3,500.

Industrialist Andrew Carnegie started the hero fund in 1904, inspired by rescue stories from a deadly mine disaster.

More than $26 million has been awarded to Carnegie heroes and their survivors. Three of the 22 honorees died rescuing others.
