Evacuees on the Road

Texas Evacuees

Dozens of cars are marooned on highways outside Houston, because they've run out of gas in the massive traffic jams caused by evacuees.

One man hoping to flee to Dallas says his family now appears to have two options: waiting for someone to bring them gas or for the hurricane to come and kill them.

Another man says he doesn't know what to do.

One gas station with pumps that failed yesterday was able to get them running today. Constables armed with shotguns are guarding the pumps. A single line has been formed to organize the chaos.

Only premium-grade fuel is left. But there have been few objections.

A woman says she had tried to soothe desperate motorists Thursday by giving away water.
