Dothan mayor Chester Sowell, proclaimed the 4th Monday in September as "family day, a day to eat with your children."
The Dothan Houston County Substance Abuse Partnership is encouraging families to have dinner together as a way to teach children values and life skills.
They say that since family dynamics have changed throughout the decades, life seems more complicated.
Susan Trawick with the Substance Abuse Partnership says, "It's a time for us to sit down and talk to our children and see what's going on in their lives"
Statistics show that 72 percent of youth who eat with their family reduce their chance of using alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
