Heat Wave

Don't expect much relief from the stifling heat and humidity this weekend. National Weather Service meteorologists say Alabamians likely will experience some of the hottest weather of the summer Saturday and Sunday and it could last into next week.

Forecasters expect temperatures to soar into the mid-to-upper 90s and to make matters worse -- heat index values of 105 to 110-degrees are possible statewide.

The heat index is a measure of how hot it feels when the effect of humidity are combined with the temperature.

If you must venture outdoors for an extended period of time -- keep the following tips in mind:

  • Wear loose, lightly colored clothing and wear a hat
  • drink plenty of water
  • take frequent breaks in the shade
  • check on the elderly, children and pets because they are especially vulnerable to the extreme heat.
