One man is hospitalized and the suspect is behind bars, after a pre-dawn shooting in western Coffee County.
Just outside a home on Plant Street in Elba, eyewitnesses say Johnnie Lockett stopped his car; the 48-year-old Elba man then allegedly began firing a handgun wildly.
A half-dozen residents and neighbors were talking on the porch; bullets flew everywhere; one struck 28-year-old Seth Cart of Elba.
An eyewitness recalls, "Seth and John came out and asked him to leave the property; that's what the police told us to do. And, all of a sudden, he just began firing, and hit Seth."
Eyewitness Matthew Justice said, "I knocked Seth's wife out of the line of firing, then I ducked down as well, trying to avoid the bullets. In a moment I looked up and Seth was lying in a pool of blood."
Lockett faces a charge of first-degree assault, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling. Several young children were reportedly inside the home when the incident took place.
"Elba authorities say that when Lockett began firing there were all kinds of people in the line of fire; he's just lucky no one else was injured. It was sheer terror."
Investigator Andy Gunter, with the Elba Police Department said, "We’re here to investigate Mr. Lockett; we'll question all those around at the time and discover the truth."
Seth Cart is reportedly in stable condition in an area hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest.
We understand the investigation into this case continues.
Lockett remains behind bars at the Coffee County Jail.
