Overcrowded Prisons

The state prison system usually accepts 175 state inmates from county jails each week.

But last week, sheriffs in Houston, Calhoun and Etowah Counties bussed an extra 240 inmates to state prisons because of overcrowded conditions.

So, a judge later ordered the state to accept an extra 100 prisoners each week.

Now, the Alabama Sheriff's Association is working on a plan that's fair for every county.

Sheriff Glover said his jail currently has only one inmate who is overdue for the state to accept him.
