Alabama Coach Dennis Franchione is headed for Texas A & M.
Alabama athletic director Mal Moore said at a news conference Thursday that Franchione called him at 3:20 p.m., saying he had accepted the job in College Station, Texas. Moore called the decision a "shock" and a "great loss" for Alabama.
Moore would not said if Alabama sweetened its contract offer to Franchione to try to get him to stay. He said he has a short list of potential replacements, but has not called anyone.
Franchione's decision came only a few hours after he flew to Texas on a private plane and about 24 hours after Moore initially confirmed that Texas A & M had requested permission to speak to the coach.
