Even the police are evacuating Gulf Shores this morning. The beach resort, still recovering from Hurricane Ivan, is almost empty on what normally would be a peak summer weekend.
Police and other Gulf Shores emergency workers rode out Ivan in a municipal building last September, but not this time.
The picture is the same across the bay at Dauphin Island. In past storms, some people chose to ride it out. But there is no sign of anyone on the island this morning. Ivan destoyed about 40 homes and washed away dunes on the fragile west end last September.
Like Gulf Shores, Dauphin Island is still in the process of recovering as Category Four Hurricane Dennis approaches the northern Gulf of Mexico coast.
