State troopers say traffic is moving smoothly up converted one-way Interstate 65 from the Mobile area to Montgomery this morning. But it's clear that tens of thousands in Mobile County and parts of Baldwin are ignoring a mandatory evacuation order.
Some say they've never evacuated. Others are heading out, just as they did during Hurricane Ivan less than a year ago.
Dennis is the earliest hurricane to reach Category 4 strength in the Caribbean on record. It dropped in strength to Category 1 after passing over Cuba, but is now a Category 2, with top winds of 100 mph. It's forecast to reach the northern Gulf of Mexico on Sunday.
