A medical missionary from Alabama has been killed in the country of Yemen.
Fifty-seven-year-old Martha Myers of Montgomery was among three American missionaries killed when a suspected Muslim extremist opened fire at a Southern Baptist hospital in the southern Yemen city of Jibla.
A man entered the hospital cradling a gun, perhaps in an attempt to make It look like a child, then opened fire. He shot and killed the three victims, and shot a fourth person who is recovering from surgery.
The three people who died are Myers, 60-year old hospital director William Koehn, of Arlington, Texas, and 53-year old Kathleen Gariety, of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Forty-nine-year-old pharmacist Donald Caswell, from Levelland, Texas, was shot in the stomach, but survived.
Martha Myers was the daughter of Ira Myers, the retired director of the Alabama Department of Public Health. Myers graduated from UAB medical school. She did an internship and residency at the University of South Alabama, before moving to Yemen. Myers devoted 24 years of her life to helping women and children in that country. She also helped with immunization programs for UNICEF.
