Alabama governor-elect Bob Riley and incumbent Gov. Don Siegelman are in North Carolina to hear about new federal school reforms.
The governors are learning about new federal school reforms designed to build on existing state testing and accountability plans.
The No Child Left Behind plan requires strict compliance by the states and their schools. At stake is more than $2 billion in federal school aid.
The law requires all states to have comprehensive testing programs in place by the fall of 2005, including mandatory reading and math tests for grades three through eight.
Riley and Siegelman are among 20 governors and governors-elect attending the session, which is in its second day.
