The Anniston Army Depot scored higher in military value than any other depots, arsenals and ammunition plants.
Of the 97 major installations at risk of being closed, the depot ranked 25th, above all the industrial installations in the Department of Defense and all the Army bases in Alabama. Only soldiers' training bases ranked higher.
The rankings were compiled by the Defense Department's Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
Hunstville's Redstone Arsenal placed 30th on the list and Dale County's Fort Rucker placed 28th.
In compiling the list released last month, the DOD measured production capacity, joint service activities and ammunition storage capacity. An installation's ability to absorb additional personnel, costs of construction and urban sprawl also factored into the rankings.
