An Alabama man wounded by police is now charged with two counts of attempted murder, authorities said.
Richard Jay McCall, 22, of Samson, Ala., was released from Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville on Saturday and taken by officers to the Central Prison infirmary in Raleigh.
A fugitive warrant also was issued for McCall, who was being held with no bond, Rocky Mount police Cpl. John Feagans said Sunday.
McCall is accused of trying to run over a patrol car with his pickup truck Thursday after officers tried to arrest him in the hotel's parking lot, police said.
The truck's oversized tires rolled on top of the police car while McCall continued to ram the cruiser, police said. Three officers fired more than a dozen rounds at the truck, wounding McCall five times.
The State Bureau of Investigation was called in to help investigate the shooting.
"We received information about a man wanted for bank robbery, and we took steps to arrest him," Hogan said. "Unfortunately, he took steps not to be arrested, and we had to use the necessary force to stop him."
Police in Kinston, Ala., identified McCall as a suspect in a bank robbery this past Tuesday, said Kinston police chief Russ Young. McCall apparently has friends in Rocky Mount, police said.
