Dothan Municipal Court Judge Rose Gordon believes the city is spending more in court cost than it has to.
Gordon believes the problem could be alleviated if they did away with contracted court referral officers and had one in-house instead.
She also believes that court and fine collection agency Maximus is taking a big bite out of Dothan’s paycheck which charges the city 35 percent of everything it collects.
Some defendants who can't pay all the cost prefer to go to jail.
Gordon says “We give them $20 a day credit towards fines and cost, every five days we put them in jail is $100 less that they would have to pay towards their fines and cost.”
The city will vote on the proposal next week in city commission.
