The Airline Pilots Association expects about a third of the nation's 100,000 commercial pilots will train to become weapons-qualified "federal flight deck officers." But Congress hasn't authorized any funding for training.
Blake Wyttenbach, a pilot for Mesa Airlines, said he'll probably volunteer to carry a weapon, though he opposed the program at first. He said he'd feel a little safer.
But not everyone agrees. Jill Roach of Maryland was at a Washington D.C. airport Wednesday to pick up relatives. She said she'd rather see air marshals on all flights. That way the pilots could focus on flying.
