Overcrowded Jails

On Tuesday, Houston County Sheriff Lamar Glover transferred nearly 60 inmates to Alabama's prison system.

A judge has refused a request from the state prison system to stop county sheriffs from dumping prisoners at the corrections system's intake prison near Montgomery.

However, he said the counties can't dump prisoners all at one time.

At a hearing Wednesday, the judge tried to get the prison system and the Association of County Commissions to work out a number that could enter state prisons each week from overcrowded county jails.

The prison system said it could take in 175 male prisoners per week. But the counties want 400 per week.

The two sides did not reach a compromise.
