The Justice Department plans to make information on sex offenders available on a single Web site.
Right now, most states publish their own list of registered sex offenders, with names, photos and background information on people
who've been convicted of sex crimes.
The federal site will allow users to do a national search for offenders.
Participation by the states will be voluntary, and the site won't provide any information not already made available by 48 states, the District of Columbia and U-S territories.
The Justice Department plans to launch the site within a couple of months.
