Dothan Mayor Chester Sowell's office has released a statement regarding a letter sent to him by the Alabama Department of Transportation.
The letter addresses the state DOT's assessment of a downtown route for the proposed Interstate 10 Connector.
DOT Director Paul Bowlin said final location of the connector has to be determined by at least three factors: function, cost and impact to the natural and man-made environment.
Bowlin said the proposed downtown route presented by the company that Dothan City Commissioners hired to do a study meets the function factor, but he said costs and impacts on the environment have not been fully addressed.
However, Bowlin said DOT officials will continue working with Dothan to refine and study the impacts of a downtown route.
A statement faxed to the WTVY News 4 Newsroom from Mayor Sowell's office indicates the mayor is happy to see the DOT moving forward with the Interstate 10 Connector and he hopes DOT will make a decision within the next six months.
