Houston County Sheriff Lamar Glover notified the Department of Corrections last week that he has 60 prisoners who are past the 30-day limit for the state to accept them.
State officials went to court to block the move, but instead of granting the state relief, Montgomery Circuit Judge William Shashy increased the penalties against the state for failing to relieve overcrowded conditions in county jails.
The judge had earlier ordered the state to pay counties $26 per day for each inmate they failed to accept on time. Now that fine has jumped to $50 per day.
Glover plans to deliver two busloads of inmates to Montgomery Tuesday, whether prison officials want them or not.
