The Houston County School Board voted to ask the Houston County Commission to set up a special election so voters can decide if they want a tax increase to fund education.
Superintendent Kenneth Lord said right now the board is looking at a three-mil property tax hike just to benefit county schools.
But a five-mil property tax increase or a half-cent countywide sales tax increase would also benefit the Dothan City School System.
Lord also told board members that Houston County ranks near the bottom of the state in expenditures per student.
Even if the tax hike is approved, Lord said it will be the Spring of 2004 before the revenue can be collected and disbursed, and a delay of just a few months in deciding the issue could postpone the additional funding until 2005.
