WICKSBURG, Ala. (AP) - A 15-year-old Wicksburg girl, identified as Whitney Lake, was killed in the crash of a vehicle being chased Saturday by Houston County sheriffs deputies.
She was a passenger in a Nissan Frontier driven by her stepfather, Robert Wills, according to investigators. Wills was in stable condition at Flowers Hospital.
Sheriff Andy Hughes says the girl's death is being treated as vehicular homicide and state troopers are handling the investigation.
Coroner Robert Byrd says the teenager was ejected from the vehicle in the crash and found about 20 feet from the edge of a creek.
The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. near a bridge that crosses Bear Creek about two miles off U.S. 84.
Deputies had attempted to investigate a suspicious vehicle parked behind a business when the driver sped away.
State Trooper Cpl. Mike Smith says it appears Wills lost control of the vehicle on a curve.
