Dad Charged with Attempted Murder in Infant Son's Injury

PHIL CAMPBELL, Ala. (AP) - A Franklin County man is charged with attempted murder and child abuse for allegedly causing his 4-month-old son's brain injury.

Sheriff's officials yesterday arrested and charged 20-year-old Raymond McKinney of Phil Campbell.

The child is clinging to life at Children's Hospital in Birmingham.

Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott says the infant is in critical condition with an acute brain bleed.

Plott says his office was notified around 2 a.m. Friday that the child was at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence and was a victim of suspected abuse.

During questioning, Plott says McKinney told investigators that he lost his temper, "jerked the baby out of bed," and shook him to get him to stop crying.

A judge set McKinney's bond at $350,000 and prohibited McKinney from contact with his son or any child if he's released on bond.
