CALERA, Ala. (AP) - Chilton County deputies late last night arrested an inmate who escaped from a work-release program Wednesday afternoon.
22-year-old Roman J. Nix was arrested in Calera just before midnight last night after trying to flee sheriff's deputies.
Deputies spotted Nix in a Wal-Mart parking lot after following several leads. He was driving the same Ford Explorer he allegedly stole Wednesday.
Sheriff Kevin Davis said Nix resisted arrest, trying to pin a deputy against the stolen SUV before fleeing. He was caught in downtown Calera.
Davis said the stolen vehicle was drivable but damaged.
Nix now faces additional theft of property and escape charges along with other charges in Shelby County, including assaulting a police officer.
Police say he stole the SUV owned by a probate office clerk while he was under the supervision of a custodian at the courthouse on a work-release program.
