Former US Senator Howell Heflin has died at the age of 83.
Heflin served as Alabama’s chief justice before becoming a key arbiter of senatorial behavior during three terms in Washington.
The cause of his death has not been determined.
Heflin had undergone heart procedures in recent years.
A spokeswoman said he had been admitted to Keller hospital in Sheffield.
Heflin, a Democrat, was elected to the US Senate in 1978.
He retired after 18 years.
