Alabama Storms

Gov. Don Siegelman has declared a state of emergency following Sunday night's devastating storms.

Lee Helms, director of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, said he spoke with the governor Monday morning and received a verbal declaration.

He said currently the EMA is in immediate response mode and is working with several local and state agencies to review damage and clear debris.

The storms killed at least 10 people and injured another 50 statewide.

The American Red Cross has opened a shelter in Walker County where the storms were especially severe.
