Gov. Siegelman canceled a news conference Wednesday evening in which he was expected to address the controversy over differing vote totals in Republican-dominated Baldwin County.

Siegelman gave no explanation for canceling the session, in which some speculated he might announce a challenge to new vote totals that give the governor's mansion to challenger Bob Riley.

Both politicians played the role of governor-elect. Siegelman held discussions with legislators about calling them into special session and said he's been talking to industrial prospects.

Meanwhile, Riley appointed former state Senator Bill Cabiness, chairman of his transition team.

Alabama voters will learn the official election results Friday when Secretary of State Jim Bennett formally certifies the vote count.
