Alfa Insurance Company said it will end wind damage coverage for some 2,300 homeowners in parts of South Mobile and Baldwin counties considered vulnerable to hurricanes.
Alfa Vice President Lee Ellis said that policyholders affected by the decision will be notified by mail approximately 60 days before the expiration date of their current policy.
Hurricane Ivan struck the Alabama-Florida coast in mid-September. Damages in Alabama were estimated at $10 billion.
Ellis said homeowners losing Alfa's wind coverage could purchase wind coverage from the Alabama Insurance Underwriting Association in Foley.
Ellis said affected homeowners in the two counties will receive a 65 percent reduction in their base homeowners premium since wind coverage will be excluded.
