A new study on education shows Alabama has made one dramatic improvement over the last 20 years -- reducing the number of pupils per teacher.
The study by the Conservative American Legislative Exchange Council found that during the 1979-80 school year, Alabama had an average of 23.6 pupils per teacher, which was the worst in the nation.
By the 1999-2000 school year, Alabama had dropped to 15.5 students per teacher. That's 26th in the nation and is better than the national average of 16.6 students per teacher, according to the group's "report card on American education."
The study ranked Alabama 43rd in student achievement.
