Capital murder charges in the slaying of a liquor store clerk will be filed against two men arrested in the sniper shootings in the Washington, D.C., area.
Montgomery Police Chief John Wilson said Friday that 41-year-old John Allen Muhammad is the alleged gunman.
Wilson said Muhammad is accused of killing 52-year-old Claudine Parker outside the store as it closed on Sept. 21. The chief said 17-year-old John Lee Malvo is being charged as an accomplice.
Wilson said at a news conference that Muhammad is believed to be the gunman chased by a policeman after he was seen standing over a victim.
The officer who chased the suspect reviewed a photo lineup and picked out Muhammad as the man standing over the victim. Wilson said the officer had not been allowed to see any of the news media accounts and photographs of Muhammad and Malvo prior to being asked to pick out the gunman from the photo lineup.
He said the death penalty would be sought against both Muhammad and Malvo under the charges being filed Friday.
