It's time to gather those trinkets and beads in southwest Alabama, the annual Mardi Gras revelry gets underway Saturday afternoon on Dauphin Island.
The Krewe de la Dauphine will hold a parade at 1 p.m. on the east end of the island.
The first parade in downtown Mobile will be the Conde Cavaliers on Jan. 21 at 6:30 p.m.
Most Mardi Gras parades and events occur in the two weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday on Feb. 8.
Historians say the carnival was first celebrated in North America in Mobile among the French colonists in the early 1700s.
Weather conditions should be ideal with highs expected in the low 70s on the island.
