After taking all of the lights and decorations off your tree, don't throw it away - recycle it instead. The city is encouraging people to drop off their trees at Dothan Utilities. This is a free service provided to the community and it will go on through January 7th.
For every ten Christmas trees recycled, one cubic yard of landfill space is saved. Dothan Utilities will start the mulching process next week. Once chopped, anyone can request mulch to use for their yards. Some will also be distributed to parks throughout the area. Dothan Utilities' Bill Thompson says people also us the trees in the bottoms of ponds as cover for fish.
The county is also collecting trees at the Road and Bridge Department located on Columbia Highway.
