A 500-pound African lion named Samson attacked his owner, Goerge Koll, Thursday after stepping into the cage for a magazine photo.
Koll owns 77 Zoological Park in the Southport community. He was giving a tour to several reporters when a photographer asked him to step inside the lion's cage for a picture. A friend said Koll does it "all the time."
Samson was calm when Koll entered. But Koll stumbled and fell, that's when the lion pounced, dragging him across the cage. The photographer jumped into the cage with a stick and pried the lion off of Koll.
Koll is at the Gulf Coast Medical Center in critical but stable condition.
