Sniper Shootings

One of the suspects in an Alabama homicide case is facing more legal troubles. Federal charges were filed Tuesday against sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad.

Federal prosecutors filed a 20-count criminal complaint against Muhammad in federal court in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The charges include discharging a firearm as part of an extortion scheme, a crime that would qualify him for the death penalty if convicted.

A note allegedly left by the sniper at one of the shooting scenes demanded $10 million.

Muhammad and 17-year-old John Lee Malvo are charged with capital murder in the Sept. 21 shooting death of a woman in Montgomery. Muhammad is also charged in the deaths of seven people in Maryland and the wounding of one person in Maryland and two in Virginia.

The charging complaint doesn't name Malvo, because he is not an adult.
