Defuniak Shooting

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has joined local authorities in the investigation of an overnight shooting of a Florida man reportedly by an off-duty officer at a Defuniak Springs apartment complex.

News 4’s Mike Gurspan reports that authorities are being tight-lipped about the death of Travis Burns.

At around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night, neighbors say they heard glass breaking at Walton County Deputy Bradley Stafford’s apartment. Moments later, there was a gunshot.

23-year-old Travis Burns reportedly was killed instantly. Burns' mother says her son had a history of drug problems but, he didn't have the money to get into a rehab program.

A neighbor says he saw Burns break the window, and then go into the deputy's apartment.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement confirms that officer Bradley "fired" his gun, after Burns broke into his apartment.

At this time, no motive has been given for the home invasion.

Details of the autopsy have not been made public at this time...

The Walton County Sheriff's Department has released a statement saying that Deputy Bradley Stafford has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
