Rex Allen Beckworth was arrested along with his stepbrother, James Earl Walker and charged in the shooting death of 87-year-old Bessie Lee Thweet of Wicksburg.
The same jury that convicted Beckworth also recommended the death penalty last month.
Judge Ed Jackson told Beckworth at his hearing Monday morning he has the option of dying by lethal injection or electrocution.
District Attorney Doug Valeska said, even if the case is not overturned on appeal, Beckworth could remain on death row for more than a decade.
Defense attorneys said they will ask for a new trial. By law, they have 30 days to file that motion.
