Almost two years ago on Christmas Day, Gene Nichols was shot in the back of the head while driving and investigators believe they have the shooter.
Around 7PM in the evening on Christmas in 2005, the Dothan Police Department received a call, reporting a one-vehicle accident at the intersection of Saint Mark Street and the Ross Clark Circle. That is where Gene Nichols died.
Major Nick Monday said in January 2006, "He was pulled from the van, they discovered he had a gunshot wound to the back of the head and we have no witness who can tell us what happened."
That was over 650 days ago, but the police department stuck with the case.
Here we are in December of 2007 with a suspect and more details.
Dothan Police Chief John Powell said, "The police department is proud to announce that a warrant has been issued for Terrance Baker, date of birth, December 28th, 1983."
The investigators indicate that the murder was drug related. And, not the only offense for Baker who is currently serving time in Montgomery on unrelated charges. If not for the efforts of investigators those charges might be the only ones he'd face.
Dothan Police Investigator, Corporal Frank Meredith said, "When we first got it, we had absolutely nothing. Detectives were devoted to this case; they spent a lot of time talking to a lot of people and piece by piece they started getting information."
Chief Powell was proud of his investigative team taking the time to note that they never close homicide investigations, as everyone has a case assigned to them and it's there until it's solved.
Baker will be transported back to Dothan at a later time for booking.
