County jails across the Wiregrass are having overcrowding issues. Last week we told you about the problem at the Geneva County Jail. Now, a similar situation can be found at the Covington County Jail in Andalusia.

News 4’s Mike Gurspan spoke with the family of one inmate who say they fear for his health and safety.

Mary Hurst says she hasn't been able to sleep since her son's arrest last month. 31-year-old Johnny Hurst was jailed for failure to pay child support and he's "behind bars" at the Covington County Jail.

The ten year old facility was designed to house a maximum of 140 inmates, currently there's close to 200 and prisoners are sleeping on floors.

Jail Administrator Captain Jerry Edgar understands the "overcrowding" with Covington County having some of the highest drug bonds' in the country.

Covington County Sheriff's Department officials say they are doing all they can to ensure the safety of the inmates housed at its Andalusia facility.
