A Holmes County sheriff's department employee has been named Florida’s Corrections Officer of the Year.
Sergeant Lynn Lee was recognized for taking charge of the communication's department after her husband was shot last March.
A mentally deranged gunman shot her husband, Bonifay Policeman Steven Lee, several times before the suspect is fatally shot by assisting officers.
At the time of the shootings, Holmes County Corrections Officer Lynn Lee was assisting dispatch when she heard Steven call for "back up.” She heard that he was shot and clinging to life, but she maintained her poise under pressure.
She said, “It was hard to hear, but I had to do what I had to do, my responsibilities to the department.”
Her boss, Sheriff Dennis Lee, says Sergeant Lynn’s poise kept everything under control. She received a plaque and a $1,000 check.
Bonifay officer Steven Lee continues to go through rehabilitation for his gunshot wounds. He hopes to be back on duty soon.
