A state appeals court has upheld the death sentence of James Earl Walker, who was convicted of killing an elderly Houston County woman more than five years ago.
Walker was found guilty of the home invasion robbery and shooting death of 87-year-old Bessie Lee Thweet of Wicksburg.
Co-defendant Rex Allen Beckworth was also sentenced to die for his part in the crime.
But, last October the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals ordered Judge Larry Anderson to clarify why he sentenced Walker to die.
The appeals court approved the new sentencing order Friday.
Court officials believe Walker is the only convicted killer to ever receive a unanimous death penalty recommendation from a jury in the 20th circuit.
