Orange Beach Construction

Orange Beach city council members will decide whether to allow construction of a hotel and convention center on one of the last large pieces of undeveloped Gulf front property.

If council members follow the recommendation of the Orange Beach Planning Commission, the 30-acre Swift-Jones property would become the site of an 18-story, 740-unit hotel and convention center.

Advocates said the proposed convention center could give the local economy more of a steady year-round income, because it would bring in visitors when the summer tourists are gone and revenue is slack.

But many local residents are against the development.
